Charter
To provide a forum for exchange of ideas and information regarding international space activities. To stimulate education, professional development, and accomplishment by fostering communication and by providing resources.

Goals

  • Make international sister sections come alive to entertain, educate, and inspire, while conducting citizen-to-citizen diplomacy
  • Encourage lectures from government, industry, and universities
  • Conduct two to four lunch-and-learns per year
  • Meet in person quarterly to discuss the committee's work and to keep up to date with related current events
  • Cooperate with other AIAA committees and other professional societies in our field
  • Recruit members for this committee, including one or more from each 'international human space activities' organization in this Houston Clear Lake area

Sister Sections

  • China
AIAA Houston Section contact person: Marlo Graves
Shanghai (sister section relationship established in 1987):
    Shanghai Astronautical Society (SAS)
    SAS Secretary-General (2008): Wu Wenxuan
Beijing (sister section relationship in work as of late 2008):
Student leader in Beijing: Franklin Zhang

The Shanghai sister section relationship never stopped its activity (as of this writing in December of 2008) but was most active from 1987 to 1992 when it was led by James C. McLane, Jr., with help from many others including his son James C. McLane III. In about 2004, AIAA Houston Section council member Chris Taylor was on a long business trip in Shanghai while working in the oil business and not in aerospace. He joined some of the Chinese sister section members there for a dinner at a restaurant, as reported in an issue of our newsletter Horizons.

Starting on Sunday, December 28, 2008, Marlo Graves is planning a two-week trip to Beijing and, if possible, Shanghai, on behalf of AIAA Houston Section.

Association Aeronautique et Astronautique de France (AAAF) Toulouse - Midi-Pyrenees branch (AAAF TMP)
AAAF TMP contact: Philippe Mairet and AAAF TMP President Alain Chevalier
AIAA Houston Section contact: Douglas Yazell

This sister Section relationship was voted into existence for 3 years as a start. It started in the 2007-2008 year for both groups. The new year starts on the first of July in AIAA and on the first of September in AAAF. As of November 2008, we have exchanged some newsletter articles and Mr. and Mrs. Yazell made a sister section visit to Toulouse while they were on a vacation of several weeks in France. Their visit took place from June 24 - 28, 2008. AAAF TMP members were very generous with their time and other resources. As of November 2008, planning for a 2010 sister section conference in Toulouse is in work, and that might be followed by a 2012 sister section conference in Houston. In 2012, perhaps in May or June of 2012, AIAA Houston Section will celebrate its 50th anniversary, so that might be a good time for a 2012 sister section conference in Houston.
  • Election Results, May 22, 2009:

Congratulations from Houston, Texas, USA, to these volunteers in France who continue to be of service to our profession, making the world a better place in very important and very inspiring ways.
